With the heat of August comes prime season for ice cream indulgences. New York City has many interesting options for frozen treats, but it’s a nondescript spot between 12th and 13th Street on Avenue A that is demanding everyone’s attention. It’s called Mikey Likes It, an ice cream shop “spreading happiness, one scoop at a time.”
How could you not be happy with the flavorful, fun, and innovative flavors they have to offer? The mastermind behind the small storefront is New York native Michael Cole who dedicates his time to creating fun flavors for locals, events, and even celebrities.
My boyfriend and I trekked over to the spot on a late afternoon. Half of the flavors were already sold out when we got there, a testament to this location’s popularity. We didn’t mind. It still took awhile for us to choose what we were going to order. A scoop, a cone? Maybe one of their several milkshake options?
We chose the Daddy Mac, a whole waffle with two scoops of ice cream. They offer either a plain waffle or a red velvet waffle, and of course we opted for the red velvet.
The flavors we chose were Foxy Brown, a mocha chocolate ice cream with Oreo and almond chunks, and Pretty in Pink, strawberry ice cream with cracked pepper and a tangy balsamic vinegar swirl. Both flavors were excellent, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was the best red velvet waffle I have ever eaten.
The store is pop culture inspired, with ice cream names that include the coconut flavored “Cool Runnings” and vanilla “Ice Ice Baby”. The small store is decorated with a huge pop icon clock. I’m embarrassed to say that I couldn’t name all of the people that the clock featured, but I will definitely be bringing my parents so that they can enjoy some ice cream and nostalgia.
Comment below if you can name all of the people on the clock!
Mikey Likes It Ice Cream is located at 199 Ave A New York, New York.
